Grof® Breathwork is experiential self-exploration that induces deep holotropic states of consciousness by combining faster and deeper breathing, vivid and evocative music, and a specific form of energy-releasing bodywork. These elements activate our inner healing capacity physically, psychologically and spiritually. The method was developed by Stanislav Grof and his late wife Christina in California in 1975.
The workshop includes:
-Introduction to holotropic Grof Breathwork
-Two breathing journeys in pairs (once as a breather, once as a sitter)
-Mandala work
-Integrative sharing circle
In this group session participants work in pairs and alternate in the roles of “breathers” and “sitters.” The process is supervised by trained facilitators, who assist participants whenever support is needed.
The breathwork sessions last approximately 3 hours and each participant will take part once as an active breather and once as a “sitter” to another participant. In the facilitated sharing circle we integrate the experiences of the day.
Holotropic breathing is a tool for accessing altered states of consciousness. Holotropic is a Greek word meaning "moving toward wholeness" — hólos meaning whole, and tropḗ meaning movement toward something.
Grof® Breathwork combines and integrates elements from modern consciousness research, depth psychology, transpersonal psychology, Eastern spiritual philosophies, shamanism, and other indigenous healing practices.
For many, breathwork offers an opportunity to encounter emotions, memories and inner insights in ways that are not possible through talk therapy alone. During breathing journeys, experiences may relate to one's own life story, birth-related experiences, symbolic or archetypal themes, or deep somatic release.
The wisdom of the inner healer guides the deep exploratory journey and the therapeutic process in holotropic states of consciousness. This allows healing and transformation to occur at a far more fundamental and causal level than conventional symptom-focused approaches.
The process is supported by trained facilitators who assist when particular needs arise. Once you have secured your place, we will ask you to complete a health screening form to ensure a safe journey for everyone.
The work is suitable for adults — curious beginners as well as those who have long engaged in inner work. We work in a supported, respectful and gentle atmosphere where everyone is free to move through their process at their own pace.
The work is not suitable if you are pregnant or have epilepsy, an aneurysm, heart disease, psychosis, or active psychiatric challenges. Please ask if you have any concerns!
